Memories of the past! – “Marsan boutey”

“Boutey, boutey!” – Bottles, bottles ! : shouted our bottles’ buyer.

In terms of recycling, he was well ahead of our era, our bottles’ buyer. Already crisscrossing Mauritius at that time, on foot or riding his bicycle, he collected and bought empty bottles from people’s homes. He filled his burlap bag with bottles collected and then brought them back to a Company for re-use.

This was the period when canned products did not exist, and plastic not yet in use in Mauritius. Most of the containers were then made of glass. Nowadays, segregated bins located in different regions have been installed and have replaced our friendly bottles’ buyer, who used to stop by our home!
