Mauritius – Joli Bois – When Mauritian Craftsmanship Tells a Story!
Joli Bois, a place with an evocative name that instantly sparks curiosity and the desire to discover it, doesn’t it? This is an invitation to follow us on an escape deeply rooted in Mauritian heritage. Stepping into Joli Bois is enough to realise that this is a place with a soul.
This former sugar factory dating back to 1855 found a new life in 2024 through a restoration project that respectfully preserved its spirit and architecture under the guidance of our host, Mr Marc Ducasse. A large part of the estate has been carefully maintained, with only a discreet touch of modernity. At the centre of the buildings stands an imposing chimney, a historic symbol of Mauritius and a silent witness to an era when sugar cane fuelled the heart of the Mauritian economy.
The welcome is warm, sincere and family-like, as Mr Ducasse and his two children personally come to greet us. Their smiles instantly put everyone at ease, with an invitation to step into a world where time truly slows down. Under Mr Ducasse’s passion for heritage, the walls themselves seem to come back to life. With emotion and sensitivity, he shares the soul and history of this timeless place.
In the workshops, the lady artisans work in a peaceful and friendly atmosphere. The sewing machines hum softly while the ladies busily carry on their work, greeting us with shy smiles. Later on, they will confess that the atmosphere is usually far livelier: chatter, songs and bursts of laughter are part of their daily routine. True magicians of fabric, these passionate women patiently and skillfully transform everything they touch into genuine treasures: pouches, backpacks, soft toys and unique comforters.
Each step is carried out with great care: cutting, sorting, stuffing, embroidery, sewing… Every creation bears the imprint of the hands that brought it to life, those of Indira, Priya, Pamela and all the other lady artisans who deeply love their craft. These women, true fairies with magical fingers, breathe a soul into fragments of fabric, transforming them into companions filled with emotion. Here, every gesture tells the story of a skill passed down with patience and love for the craft; a meticulous choreography performed with devotion and passion.
Sharks, monkeys, starfish… and of course the mythical dodo gradually take shape in strict compliance with international toy manufacturing standards. And to make each piece even more special, creations can also be personalised upon request. A thoughtful gesture was offered to us: getting hands-on by creating our own keyring, a unique souvenir that we will cherish from this place.
The spirit of Joli Bois is also built around a truly circular and human economy. The estate works hand in hand with people from the surrounding community: small planters, local manufacturers, artisans, farmers and villagers. The dodo structures displayed in the garden were created by a nearby craftsman, while two local neighbours lovingly take care of the green spaces with the same kindness and dedication.
This philosophy extends all the way to the dining table. The products used for tastings and meals are 100% local and carefully sourced from Mauritian producers to offer fresh, vegetarian and typical Mauritian cuisine. Every meal is prepared with passion, generosity and a spirit of sharing. Here, authenticity is not simply told, it is lived and savoured.
An amusing anecdote emerges as the director, coming straight from the kitchen still wearing his apron, shares the story of an old chest dating back to 1910, instantly transporting us back into the estate’s past. At Joli Bois, they do not merely craft objects; they tell stories with simplicity, creating emotions and handmade memories crafted with the heart.
Joli Bois is also the perfect place to find original souvenir gifts for both children and adults. Inside the boutique, each creation tells a story and showcases Mauritian craftsmanship through unique objects, seasonal fruit jams and pickles, spices and many other authentic keepsakes to take home.
Between heritage, craftsmanship, transmission and conviviality, Joli Bois, proudly bearing the Made in Moris label, is far more than a workshop. It is a vibrant and deeply human place where every detail tells the story of Mauritius with rare sincerity. We were also entrusted with news of several upcoming projects, which will undoubtedly further enhance an experience that is already greatly appreciated.
At the end of this delightful, suspended moment in time, it becomes difficult for us to leave. One could almost imagine settling into the garden a little longer, simply to admire in the distance the sunset said to be exceptional, slowly disappearing behind the surrounding mountains.
Without a doubt, we will be back !
