Mauritius: A Sensory Escape into the Heart of Our Villages

Flacq, Mahébourg, Port Louis… Towns and villages with evocative names. Would you like to discover them through a sensory escape? Then follow us for a most authentic immersion. Let us lace up our walking shoes, awaken our five senses… and set off.

We start our day in the village of Flacq, the vibrant heart of eastern Mauritius, where tradition, modernity and authenticity intertwine. Unlike coastal villages oriented towards the sea, Flacq developed as a true regional centre. Our first stop is cultural: a kovil, a richly decorated Tamil temple. Colours burst before our eyes, while the scent of incense gently reminds us of the sacred nature of the place. The melodic chanting of prayers, carried by the priest’s voice, seems to suspend time and perpetuate ancestral traditions.

We then cross the street to reach the Vanilla Garden, a place reminiscent of our grandparents’ tropical gardens. Amid a lively array, fruit trees, tropical flowers, aromatic plants and, as a hidden treasure, this vanilla plantation growing side by side. Here let’s discover the secrets behind the patient cycle of this precious pod while savouring its delicate fragrance.

In the backyard, a small hut catches our attention. A soft, sweet aroma lingers in the air: two large cauldrons slowly transform sun-ripened fruits into mouthwatering jams. Surrounded by an abundance of tropical fruits, we taste banana, coconut, papaya and tamarind jams before enjoying a freshly pressed sugar cane juice. Discreet and preserved, the Vanilla Garden invites us to rediscover the simple and precious beauty of Mauritian nature.

We head towards the centre of Flacq and take a small alley leading to one of the island’s finest dhal puri vendors. An iconic Mauritian specialty, dhal puri is enjoyed just as a local : standing at a street corner, eaten on the go, while daily life unfolds around.

Further along, another gourmet stop introduces us to the gastronomy of our Muslim compatriots. We take our seats to savour a delicious haleem, a thick, spiced lamb soup, followed by chicken tikkas, tender marinated pieces grilled to perfection. Each bite reveals the richness of the influences that shape Mauritian cuisine. We move on to another gastronomic stop, this time to enjoy a classic Mauritian dish served with lentils and pickles.

This day ends at the Flacq market, a vibrant place with a truly unique atmosphere. Stalls overflowing with tropical fruits and vegetables create a living, colourful tableau. Vendors call out in melodic voices, exchange jokes and share smiles. As we wander through the market lanes, we are invited to taste a rare fruit here, an Indian sweet there, and further along, a refreshing coconut water to quench our thirst, extending this journey of the senses.

This is where comes to an end, our immersion into Mauritian everyday life, in collaboration with our partner Taste Buddies. We leave fulfilled, in every sense of the word, nourished not only by the generosity of flavours but also by the richness of encounters, aromas and emotions. A day at the heart of an authentic island, etched into our sensory memory.
