Chasing sunsets and the first signs of summer in Mauritius
There’s something magical about the way summer tiptoes back into our lives here in Mauritius. It starts slowly, the air turns softer and warmer, not with a loud announcement, but with a gentle shift in the air.
The mornings feel lighter, as if the breeze itself is exhaling warmth. The chill that once greeted us is fading, and the clothes that kept us warm, that once felt essential are now folded away, making space for sleeveless tops and light cotton shirts.
Trainers ? Back in the closet. Flip-flops have taken over, as they should.
The sun lingers a little longer each day, casting golden light over the sugarcane fields and banyan trees, and sending sparkles across the turquoise lagoons.
This evening, I am heading west to one of my favorite places, Flic en Flac beach. The scent of fruit pickles drifts from a nearby vendor, and kids are chasing waves along the shoreline. A few families are setting up late picnics, their laughter mixing with the sound of sega music and ravanne being played by a group of people.
The sea is warm, and though it’s nearing sunset, a handful of people are still in the water, like me, sneaking in one last swim. The sky turns a fiery orange, then soft pink, as the sun begins to dip behind the horizon. This is the reason I came here, for this sunset moment.
There’s something special about Sunday evenings like this, ending the week with salty skin, sandy toes, and a heart full of gratitude. Summer begins not just in the skies or seas but in these quiet, golden moments we carry with us long after the sun sets which are soul healing.
